Leçon 2
Pour se faire connaissance Getting to know one another
Salut/Bonjour-----(to greet someone in the day) Hello. Bonjour is literally translated to mean 'good day'.
Comment est-ce que tu t'appelles?-----What is your name? (Literally translated to mean 'What are you called?' because appeller is the verb for call)
Je m'appelle/Je suis...(your name)-----My name is/I am...
(Comment) Ça va?/Comment vas-tu?-----How are you? Comment in the first sentence is optional. Ça va alone may sound informal.
Très bien, merci/Ça va. (Et toi/vous?)-----I'm fine, thank you. (And you?)/Bof!
Bonsoir-----(to greet someone in the evening/night) Hello. Literally translated to mean 'Good evening'. It can also be used to say goodbye in the evening/night.
Au revoir/Adieu/Salut/Tchao-----Goodbye. revoir means 'to see again'. Adieu is less commonly used now although it is usually used in poems or proses found in the Elizabethan era.
Bonne nuit-----Good night (usually just before going to sleep)
Où est-ce que tu habites?-----Where do you live?
J'habite...(address)-----I live...
*vous has the same meaning as tu but it is used only when the person one is addresing is from a respectable background or if he/she is older, very much like the nin2 in chinese. Vous is also used when one is addressing more than 1 person. The grammar that applies to vous will naturally be different from tu
